Mui Ne Transportation Guide
Getting to Mui Ne
Phan Thiet is 198 km east of Ho Chi Minh City along Highway 1. From Phan Thiet, you have to take Route 706 and go further east for 22 km to reach Mui Ne Beach. Both Phan Thiet and Mui Ne can be reached by bus or car and requires a minimum of three hours. Nha Trang and Dalat are nearby cities. Nha Trang is five hours away while Dalat can be reached in three to five hours depending on the road that you take. Mui Ne will have most of the major tour companies running their services here. There is no airport in Mui Ne or the other nearby cities.
By Bus
Most tourists prefer to go to Mui Ne on one of the tour buses that ply between Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang. These buses leave Ho Chi Minh City in the early hours of the morning, around 7:30 am, and reach Mui Ne at approximately 1 pm. On the way, the bus may stop at a petrol station equipped with a shop or snack outlets for the benefit of the passengers. The price of the ride is around 6 USD each way and tickets are available everywhere in the tourist destinations of Ho Chi Minh City or Nha Trang.
By Taxi
You can reach Mui Ne by hired taxis available at Ho Chi Minh City. The rates are approximately 60 U.S. dollars. It will take around three and half hours to reach Mui Ne. Do not board the taxi without confirming the price.
By Train
The train may have carriages booked by private travel companies apart from the regular carriages. The private carriages are somewhat more comfortable than the usual ones as they are more spacious but they are not luxurious. The regular carriages may not be able to accommodate the average build of a Westerner. Sometimes, the railway authorities will try to pack all the passengers into one carriage in order to free up other carriages for more passengers. These tickets are sold at a premium. The trains are jam packed during holidays.
All in all, the train journey is less convenient compared to a tour bus but you get to avoid traffic and get a good view of the countryside - so there are some advantages!
Getting Around Mui Ne
Mui Ne is a small place and getting around is easy. The town consists of one main street, Nguyen Dinh Chieu. Motorbike taxis are also available but remember to haggle (20000 dong is more than adequate per trip). Motorbikes or bicycles can be rented and are a good way to get around. Rates vary between 60000 to 150000 dong per day, depending on the number of hours and type of vehicle.
Getting Out of Mui Ne
A number of travel agencies operate along the Mui Ne strip and organise daily trips in and around Mui Ne and other cities. You can book airline, railway or tour bus tickets at these places. Take care to look around before deciding on a travel agency as whilst most are honest and fair, there are some unscrupulous agencies that will often rip off an unwary tourist by overcharging fares.
