Place of event: Thuy Tu Temple
The annual event is held to worship Ong Nam Hai, or Mr Whale, a friendly animal that is believed to help fishermen in danger at sea. This is a time when fishermen pray for smooth and calm seas, an abundant yield, and peace.
Fishermen in traditional costumes parade in their boats, inviting the whale to come to their villages, receive offerings, and offer them a comfortable life. The festival, which is held at Thuy Tu Temple, a national cultural heritage site which stores over 100 sets of whalebones.
